NORMAL - Normal is expected to spend a total of about $9 million on road work over the next five years.

That's what the council will consider Monday night. Councilman Adam Nielsen asked for more money to be spent on roads, and town staff found four sources to pull an extra $3 million for the work over five years.

Assistant to the City Manager Sally Heffernan said most of the extra funding comes from the refinancing of a 2004 bond in the Uptown.

"There'll be some short term borrowing from the vehicle reserve fund, we're going to postpone two capital improvement projects that were planned but not essential. We can wait another year or two for those," Heffernan said. "And, we're going to use some proceeds from the recent sale of property in Uptown Normal to Busey Bank," Heffernan said.

The town's streets are broken down into priority lists with an estimated cost and the type of work needed. Town Engineer Gene Brown said they will try to wipe out all the priority one streets first. He said several streets will moved up on the priority list to be worked on this year. More residential streets will be resurfaced.
