CLINTON - Task Force 6 officials said two people were arrested in Clinton recently on drug charges and a money laundering count.

Police said John D. Smith, 54, and Mary F. Smith, 52, were arrested for criminal drug conspiracy, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and one count of money laundering.

Officials said offenses were enhanced because they were within 1,000 feet of a school.

Both are being held in the DeWitt County Jail. All the charges except money laundering are considered Class X felonies. If convicted, a Class X carries a possible sentence of 6 to 30 years in prison.

The arrested stemmed from a Task Force 6 investigation assisted by the Illinois Attorney General's Office, DeWitt County Sheriff's Office, Clinton Police, the FBI and the state police.
