NORMAL – Central Illinois Congressmen Darin LaHood and Rodney Davis announced Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved a grant of $326,327 for Unit 5 schools.

The grant money will create an interactive distance learning network, according to a news release. This program will be available to six school districts across central Illinois. The schools will be connected through a distance learning network, and advanced placement courses will be offered, as well as dual enrollment courses so that students can earn college credits.

“This award is a testament to the tireless work being done by McLean County educators, and I applaud Secretary Perdue and the Trump Administration for recognizing this important work,” said LaHood.

“While rural schools had previously been at a disadvantage, this grant will help improve access to college courses ensuring that students in schools large and small have the same opportunities,” Davis said.

In the release, Unit 5 Superintendent Mark Daniel said this will provide technology for the district and offer rural districts access to curriculum that is not currently provided.

The network will support over 17,000 students across central Illinois.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
