SPRINGFIELD – How much is in your retirement account? State Treasurer Mike Frerichs says if you are afraid to look, you’re not alone. He says the nation is in a retirement crisis.

“The median retirement savings for working age households is $5000. One third of Illinois retirees rely on Social Security for 90 percent of their retirement,” Frerichs told the City Club of Chicago. “You will help, because your tax dollars will make sure these good people have a place to live, food to eat, and medicine to treat their ills.”

Frerichs says his office’s Secure Choice program makes retirement savings accessible to more Illinoisans and now has 29,000 participants saving almost $7 million.

He also touted his office’s college savings program, saying how much money is in your account does not matter nearly as much as simply whether you have an account at all. “The existence of a college savings account makes it three times more likely a kid goes to college,” he said. “It’s the message you’re sending.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
