Four hurt in I-55 crash near Towanda

TOWANDA – The Normal Fire Department reported four people were hurt early Sunday evening in a two-car crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55, just north of the Towanda exit.

Police shut down the southbound lanes, diverting traffic at the Lexington exit. However, motorists between Lexington and the accident scene were stuck there for about three hours.

A helicopter transported one of the injured to a hospital in Champaign-Urbana, while the fire department took three occupants of the other car to Bloomington-Normal hospitals.

The accident happened about 5:20 p.m. The Towanda Fire Department joined Normal rescue crews at the scene, along with Normal Police, McLean County Sheriff’s deputies, and Illinois State Police.

Information about the victims’ conditions or how the accident happened are not available.
