BLOOMINGTON – Illinois’ five Republican congressmen are joining Gov. JB Pritzker in urging President Donald Trump to keep Rod Blagojevich in prison.
The president said on Wednesday that he’s seriously considering reducing the former governor’s 14 year prison sentence because he believes Blagojevich hasn’t been treated fairly.
Blagojevich has so far served seven years of his sentence on federal corruption charges.
The five GOP lawmakers, including Rodney Davis, Darin LaHood, and Adam Kinzinger, put out a news release Thursday stating that commuting the sentence “sets a dangerous precedent and goes against the trust voters place in elected officials.”
They said it’s important to take “a strong stand against pay-to-play politics, especially in Illinois where four of our last eight governors have gone to federal prison.”
The congressmen said Blagojevich has a clear and documented record of egregious corruption.
