UPDATE: Suspect surrounded on I-55, U.S. Marshal Dead

LINCOLN – Illinois State Police have surrounded an armed and dangerous suspect wanted on multiple warrants including a McLean County warrant.

Sangamon County Sheriff’s office responded to the Extended Stay America in Rockford, for a call to assist U.S. Marshals agents in reference to a report of shots fired around 9:15 a.m.

“They (police) were responding in regards to a shooting involving a member of the U.S. Fugitive Task Force,” said Rockford Police Department Spokesman John Pozzi. “Upon arrival law enforcement from the area secured the scene. The injured party, which was a U.S. Task Force assigned to this task force, was transported to a local hospital, and (has passed away). Law enforcement agencies secured the perimeter and we quickly learned that there was a female acquaintance of the suspect still inside the hotel room. With the assistance of Regional Law Enforcement, the female was extracted from the room, she did sustain a gun shot wound. She was transported to a local hospital, where she is currently being treated.”

Brown, then fled the scene in a vehicle to I-55.

“He (Brown) is currently right now evolved in a barricaded subject situation with the Illinois State Police, other law enforcement agencies, on Interstate 55 south of Bloomington and Springfield Illinois,” said Pozzi.

Interstate 55 North Bound and South Bound along with Route 66 are temporarily shut down.
