MAROA – A single-vehicle crash in rural Maroa Friday night claimed the life of a DeWitt County man.

Macon County Coroner Michael Day said William Shane Peterson, 41, of Kenney was killed in the accident on Washington Street, near Lake Fork Lane, west of Maroa at about 10 p.m.

Authorities said the vehicle Peterson was in was westbound on Washington Street when it left the roadway, hit a culvert and a utility pole before catching fire.

Police said a passing motorist freed a woman from the vehicle. She’s believed to be Peterson’s wife. An ambulance took her to an area hospital.

Peterson remained trapped inside, and the coroner said he suffered severe head and chest injuries before the vehicle caught fire.

The coroner and Macon County Sheriff’s Police are investigating.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
