A match-up of teams tied for the runner-up spot in the Big Twelve Conference highlights the Week 8 WJBC Friday Night High School Football Extravaganza.

Normal West (6-1, 5-1 Big Twelve) hosts Champaign Central (5-2, 5-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams are one game behind Normal Community in the conference standings. West has won five straight games while the visiting Maroons are on a four-game winning streak.

Although the host Wildcats already clinched a playoff spot last week, coach Nathan Fincham said the team has unfinished business.

“All off-season we were talking about how last year we didn’t finish like we should have,” Fincham said. “We had a great opportunity to go 8-1 last year and we ended up going 7-2, losing our last game of the year. That’s been our focus these last few weeks to take one game at a time and do everything we can to give ourselves a chance to be 8-1 at the end of the year.”

The remaining Intercity games are included in the Week 8 Extravaganza. Illinois Valley Central (3-4) travels to Central Catholic (0-7), Springfield (4-3) visits U-High (1-6), Normal Community (6-1, 6-0 Big Twelve) goes to Champaign Centennial (2-5, 2-4) and Bloomington (5-2, 4-2 Big Twelve) travels to Peoria (4-3, 4-2).

The Extravaganza begins at 6:10 p.m. Friday on AM 1230 WJBC and WJBC.com. Updates from all games are every quarter-hour with post-game until 11 p.m. Scores and other preview information can be found on the WJBC Sports Twitter feed (@SportsWJBC, #WJBCHSFB).

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
