Grossinger Motors Arena is set to host a not so typical sporting tournament for central Illinois.

The inaugural Sixty Six Games Esports Tournament will bring competitors to Bloomington-Normal to play live and in-person “League of Legends.”

The event will be held January 12-13, 2019. Three different levels of play will be featured including college/open, high-school only, and one-on-one action.

The tournament is organized by the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau with State Farm as the title sponsor.

WJBC’s Scott Laughlin and Kevin Bessler sat down with Matt Hawkins, the bureau’s sports marketing manager, as he hopes the event will attract spectators to the area.

“That was kind of the one x-factor we weren’t so sure about…we are pretty confident we can get the teams and people to come play but we want as many people to come and watch,” said Hawkins.

This is central Illinois’ first sanctioned esports live tournament.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
