Dr. John H. Avery

BLOOMINGTON – Dr. John H. Avery, 88, went into the presence of his Lord Jesus on July 29, 2018.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 2pm at Bloomington Bible Church, 1008 E. Emerson, Bloomington, IL with Pastor Dennis Powers officiating. Following the service burial will be at Scogin Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be held from 12-2pm on Saturday at the church.

Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

John was born June 24, 1930, Sunfield, MI to Herbert Lee and Viola Gray Avery. He was united in marriage to Marsha E. Hancock, March 22, 1951, Redford, Township, MI.

Surviving include Marsha, his beloved wife of 67 years; three children, daughter Deborah Ann (Manolo) Serradilla-Avery, Seville, Spain; son John Paul (Esther), Chattanooga, TN; and son Peter James (Cynthia), Kirvin, TX; three grandchildren; Dan (Laura) Serradilla-Avery, Seville, Spain; John Mark Avery, Marlborough, MA; and Cpt Arthur (Jessica) Avery, Colorado Springs, CO; great grandson Matthew James Avery, Colorado Springs, CO and great granddaughter Olivia Mae Serradilla-Avery, Seville, Spain. Also, John and Marsha were blessed with three very special children (families); Dr. William and Jeri Ilch, Lake St. Louis, MO; Bruce and Kim McNamee and children Brad, Hope, Grace and Cole, Levittown, PA; and Yonggong and Hong Wang and daughter Joanna, Marlboro, NJ. John also has three surviving brothers, Darrell and Ron, MI and Don, MO. John’s parents and sister Elizabeth proceeded him to be with the Lord.

Upon retirement from Delaware Valley University, John and Marsha moved to Bloomington, IL where he substituted in the Unit 5 School system until he was 80.

Serving his Lord was the most important part of John’s life, followed by being a devoted and loving husband and father.
