BLOOMINGTON – A McLean County grand jury has charged a Bloomington nurse with criminal neglect that allegedly caused a patient’s death last year.

Shameka Curry, 37, is also accused of identity theft and financial exploitation of the elderly for allegedly stealing money from the woman, who died last year at age 69.

Curry said in a court document she’s a licensed practical nurse.

The grand jury last week indicted Curry on two counts of criminal neglect of an elderly person. The charges allege Paula Adams died because Curry failed to provide her with adequate nutrition, did not move her to prevent bed sores, or take her to scheduled medical appointments over a six month period ending in March of 2017, shortly before Adams’ death.

Curry is also charged with aggravated identity theft and financial exploitation of the elderly for allegedly using Adams’ personal identification information to obtain $350, also in March of last year.

In addition, the grand jury indicted Curry for theft over $10,000 for allegedly taking Illinois Department of Rehabilitation property over a three year period.

Curry posted a $15,035 cash bond and was released from jail. She’s hired a private attorney who declined comment on the case. Curry’s arraignment is scheduled for August 10.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
