BLOOMINGTON – Central Catholic High School is searching for a new head football coach.

The school reports Mike Moews has resigned after five years as the head coach of the Saints. The Saints were 39-14 under Moews as head coach. Moews led the Saints to the playoffs in each of his five seasons at the helm.

He was an assistant coach for 26 years with the program before taking over as head coach, continuing a long association with the school.

“I got into it when the former coach asked me to help out, and being my alma mater I jumped at the chance,” Moews remembered. “Who knew 30 years later I was still going to do it.”

Moews remembered an example of how Saints football has been a family.

“We had a couple of military guys walk up to our practice,” Moews recalled. “As it turns out, they were two former players who had been deployed overseas. They got back in town and saw what time it was and they came out to practice, I think just to get a taste of home.”

Moews said he’s proud of his time with the Saints.

“I know in my heart we did it for the right reasons, for the kids and the school, and had some success along the way,” Moews said. “We can hold our head high with what we did over the years. I’m proud of the kids and I want to thank them. My former coaches and the families have been tremendous.”

Moews declined to give a reason for the resignation.

In a release, Central Catholic Principal Sean Foster stated only that “we appreciate the hard work and service Coach Mike gave Central Catholic and our football program.”

No immediate word on a replacement was given. The Saints open the 2018 season at home against Pontiac on Aug. 24.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
