NORMAL – The head baseball coach at Heartland Community College is leaving the Twin Cities to take a role on a Division I staff.

Brian Furlong has been named as the pitching coach at Xavier University in the Big East Conference. He came to the Hawks program two years ago after a stint as an assistant pitching coach and director of baseball operations at Creighton University.

During his two seasons as head coach, the Hawks were 85-26. Heartland advanced to the past season’s Region 24 championship game after winning a division title. The 2018 squad recorded the second-best grade point average in program history. A total of 31 players under Furlong continued to play after completing their Heartland career with 18 of those moving on to Division I universities.

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life
