BLOOMINGTON – Illinois Wesleyan’s softball team will be spending much – and hopefully for them, all – of Memorial Day weekend in Oklahoma City for the NCAA Division III College World Series.

The Titans open the the double-elimination national finals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Rowan.

IWU coach Tiffany Prager, who is in her second season as coach, said there’s a comfort level having been there before.

“Just knowing the area and also just continuing to trust our team and what they are about (will help),” Prager said. “I just think we are gong to go in loose and experienced and that’s the best way to play.”

Titans leftfielder Syndey Alery, who hit tie-breaking homeruns in both IWU victories over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Super Regionals on Saturday, hopes the experience of playing the finals last year will help.

“The competition just gets better every weekend, and so being in Oklahoma City last year we realize the calibier of play that it takes to get there and to compete every pitch,” Alery said.

IWU won its first game at the World Series last year, but bowed out to eventual national champion Virginia Wesleyan.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
