NORMAL – Illinois State head men’s basketball coach Dan Muller has announced the signing of transfer Keith Fisher III.

Fisher, who is transferring from San Jose State, will sit out the 2018-19 season due to the NCAA Transfer Residency requirement.

“We are extremely excited to add Keith to our program,” said Muller. “Keith had a terrific redshirt freshman year and we believe the sky is the limit. Next year we will focus on Keith and his continued development as a player and athlete so he will be ready to jump right in after we graduate our seniors. Keith is a long, athletic forward that played at a high level high school under an elite staff at Westchester. He is a terrific young man and will contribute a great deal to our community and program.

Fisher played in all 30 games for the Spartans in 2017-18, and was the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 10.4 points per game, and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game. He also led San Jose State with 25 steals. He reached double-figure scoring 15 times, including three games of 20 or more points. He finished strong, leading the Spartans in scoring in five of the last seven games of the season. He missed the entire 2016-17 season after having surgery on his knee.

Twice in the same week, the Los Angeles native set career-highs in scoring, putting up 23 points at Colorado State on Feb. 10, and seven days later topped it with 27 points at Wyoming on Feb. 17. He had three double-doubles during the season, including scoring 15 points with 13 rebounds at Santa Clara on Dec. 21, and 17 points and 13 rebounds against Fresno State on Valentine’s Day.

Fisher becomes the eighth member of the newcomer class at Illinois State that includes former San Jose State teammate Jaycee Hillsman and Eastern Kentucky transfer Dedric Boyd who will all redshirt this coming season. Also included in this newcomer class is freshmen Rey Idowu and Obdou Ndiaye, junior college transfer Josh Jefferson, and Zach Copeland and Matt Chastain, both of whom sat out last season.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
