BLOOMINGTON – The man hired to lead Central Catholic High School’s athletic department is a former head football coach who led another intercity team to a state championship.

Hud Venerable has been hired as Central Catholic’s athletic director, replacing Doug Atkins, who retired.

Listen to Marc Strauss’s interview with Hud Venerable:

” I didn’t realize Doug had retired and that they were looking for a replacement,” said Venerable. “Sean Foster, the principal at Central Catholic, invited me to interview for the position. The job was offered to me and I accepted it with great excitement. I’m very excited and anxious to get back involved in a full-time situation and this couldn’t be more perfect for me and my family.”

Venerable coached Normal Community High School’s football squad to the 2006 Class 6A state title. He led the Ironmen for 14 seasons before leaving to become the head coach at Lincoln-Way Central and later that school’s athletic director.

Venerable recently moved back to Bloomington-Normal and was expected to be a member of Illinois Wesleyan University’s coaching staff this fall. He traveled with the Titans on their recent trip to Japan and told WJBC Radio that discussions with Central Catholic accelerated upon the team’s return.

In addition to winning a state title at NCHS Venerable also led the Ironmen to a state runner up finish in 2005. He also coached at Jacksonville (six years), Monticello (five years) and Rich South (one year) and is a member of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
