BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Thunder goaltender Logan Halladay has been named CCM/USHL Goaltender of the Week, the United States Hockey League announced on Monday.

Halladay, a Merrimack College commit, played a key role in helping the Thunder (21-23-4-3, 49 pts) earn at least one point in all three games this past weekend. He finished the weekend off with his stingiest performance of the three games, posting a 19-save effort in a 4-1 win over Team USA on Sunday.

Halladay’s Goaltender of the Week honor comes in one of his best stretches of the season and is his third career plaudit and second this season. Since the Thunder reacquired Halladay at the trade deadline, the Cary, North Carolina, native has yielded two goals or fewer in five of his six starts. He has started in every game since his return and boasts a .950 save percentage and a 1.32 goals-against-average in his last five games.

Although he didn’t earn wins in his first two games of the weekend against Muskegon on Thursday and Friday, Halladay posted 73 saves on 77 shots between those two games. He compiled 36 saves on Thursday and followed that up with 37 stops on Friday, helping the Thunder take the Eastern Conference’s third place team to overtime both nights. In his third full USHL season, Halladay’s performances against Muskegon were his highest save totals in back to back games in his career.

Halladay and defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk have combined for the Thunder’s three weekly honors this season. Kalynuk was named USHL Defenseman of the Week on Jan. 2, while Halladay was previously named Goaltender of the Week on Nov. 14. His first career weekly recognition came on Jan. 4 last season.

Halladay’s mask this season is dedicated to the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and will be raffled off at the end of the season to benefit the Global Down Syndrome Foundation. Fans can purchase raffle tickets here to be entered to win the mask and other items, including a game-used stick signed by Halladay.

Bloomington starts a five-game road trip this weekend with a two-game series against the Lincoln Stars. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. on Friday night and 7:05 on Saturday night.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
