ST. LOUIS – Much of the attention on Arch Madness weekend is on the Illinois State men’s basketball team, but the Missouri Valley Conference is taking time to honor a legend of the women’s game.

Charlotte Lewis, a former Redbird star and Olympian was inducted into the MVC Hall of Fame on Friday in St. Louis.

Her coach, Hall-of-Famer, Jill Hutchison told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin and Patti Penn, Lewis used her raw athletic ability to dominate on the court – as she didn’t play basketball in high school.

“For her to have made that leap from that to the Olympics in ’76 is kind of mind boggling,” Hutchison said. “That tells you what a tremendous athlete she really was.”

Lewis died in 2007 at age 52. Lewis owns nearly all of the ISU women rebounding records and is one of only three players in ISU women’s basketball history to have her jersey retired.

Lewis become the 11th Illinois State representative in the MVC Hall of Fame, joining Kenneth “Buzz” Shaw (1998), Doug Collins (1998), Cathy Boswell (2003), Will Robinson (2003), Jill Hutchison (2008), John Coughlan (2009), Linda Herman (2014), D.A. Weibring (2015), Dave Bergman (2016) and Sue Daggett Miller (2016).

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
