NORMAL – McLean County’s Finance Committee met at Illinois State University’s Bone Student Center Tuesday to further discuss the long voter lines many students experienced on campus in March.

Board Member Erik Rankin believed the county can do better than a three hour wait time.

“I really do believe that. If that makes me wrong, then I’m wrong,” said Rankin. “What is a reasonable wait time? I believe that it’s not three hours.”

Board Member Carlo Robustelli said there is absolutely a lot the county can do better during the November election.

“It’s not just squarely the County Clerk’s office. It is their organizational responsibility, but they need to have the resources and there are ways that everybody on the County Board can help support them,” said Robustelli. “Whether it’s get out messages to the community, bring people together and have conversations.”

County Clerk Kathy Michael said they’re drawing up a plan to try and improve on the wait time. That plan – including a budget – will be presented in June.

“We’re gonna write it out, say we think we need this many touch screens, we think we need this many computers – we hope it’s enough for everybody – and we’re gonna do the best we can,” said Michael. “There’s no finite, exact number.”

Michael has put much of the blame for the long voting lines on the same-day voter registration law. She said part of their efforts over the next several months will involve encouraging students to register and/or vote early.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
