BLOOMINGTON – Damage claims have been pouring in in recent days following the storms that hit northern Illinois this week.

State Farm and Country Financial have both set up mobile sites to process claims faster in the area where nine confirmed tornadoes tour through late Monday, leaving million dollars of dollars in damages.

“We’ve seen damage from winds and quite a bit of hail damage too believe it or not,” State Farm spokesman Angie Harrier said, adding the insurer has handled 1,200 auto damage claims and nearly 600 homeowner claims as a result of the storms.

Country Financial reports it has handled hundreds of claims in northern Illinois this week mostly for tornado and wind damage. Country said it has paid $14 million in claims from storms in Illinois this month.

Harrier recommends keeping an inventory of your home in case it is damaged in a storm.

“It just makes that process so much easier when you are going through something where all of your belongings have been scattered to the wind, you are overwhelmed, you are emotional,” Harrier said. “It’s really hard to remember every single thing you own.”

Country has set up a mobile claims center in Coal City. State Farm has set up a mobile site in Shorewood to handle auto claims. Harrier said that site will remain open though Sunday.

At least seven people were injured in the severe storms that rolled through Will, Kankakee, Lee, Grundy and LaSalle counties late Monday.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
